Overdimensjonert

Overdimensjonert is a Norwegian term used to describe a component, system, or solution that is designed or built larger than strictly necessary for its current function. The word combines over (beyond) and dimensjonert (dimensioned).

The concept is common in engineering and design, where deliberate safety margins, uncertainties in load or demand, potential future growth, ease of maintenance, or compliance with standards lead to overdimensioning. It can also result from conservative design practices or long procurement cycles.

Overdimensioning carries costs. Larger components typically weigh more, require more space, use more materials and energy, and incur higher purchase, installation, and operating expenses. It can also add unnecessary complexity and reduce efficiency. In some cases, the added reliability or longer service life justifies the margin, making it a deliberate trade-off.
