Otres

Otres is a coastal area in Sihanoukville Province, Cambodia, comprising Otres Beach and the nearby inland settlement of Otres Village. Located on the Gulf of Thailand, it lies to the south of the city of Sihanoukville. The area is known for a long, sandy shoreline and a relatively laid‑back atmosphere compared with the busier beaches closer to Sihanoukville town. Otres Beach is commonly described as having two sections, Otres 1 and Otres 2, with a range of accommodations from budget bungalows to eco-lodges and mid‑range resorts, along with restaurants and small markets.

Originating as a fishing village, Otres gained popularity among backpackers and expatriates in the 2000s as a quieter alternative to central Sihanoukville. In the 2010s and beyond, the area saw rapid investment in hotels, guesthouses, and infrastructure, spurring discussions about land use, environmental management, and the balance between development and local livelihoods.

The local economy is dominated by tourism-related activities, including accommodation, dining, day-trip services, and water-based activities. The area attracts visitors seeking a more relaxed beach experience and is often contrasted with the more developed or crowded parts of Sihanoukville.

Otres has a tropical monsoon climate with a rainy season from May to October and a dry season from November to April. It is accessible from Sihanoukville by road, typically a short drive of 15–30 minutes depending on traffic and location.
