Osteospermums

Osteospermum is a genus of flowering plants in the family Asteraceae, commonly known as African daisies or cape daisies. These plants are native to southern Africa and are popular ornamental plants worldwide. Osteospermums are typically grown as annuals in cooler climates but can be perennial in frost-free regions. They are characterized by their daisy-like flowers, which come in a wide array of vibrant colors including white, yellow, orange, pink, purple, and red. Many varieties also feature contrasting centers, often dark purple or black, adding to their visual appeal.

The leaves of Osteospermum are usually ovate to lance-shaped, and some varieties have slightly serrated or lobed margins. The plants generally have a bushy, mounding habit, making them suitable for mass plantings, borders, containers, and hanging baskets. They thrive in full sun and well-drained soil. While generally low-maintenance, regular watering during dry periods is beneficial. Deadheading spent blooms can encourage more prolific flowering throughout the season. Osteospermums are relatively pest and disease resistant, though they can occasionally be affected by aphids or whiteflies.
