The OpenSolaris.org community was composed of developers, system administrators, and enthusiasts who contributed to the project by submitting code, reporting bugs, and providing feedback. The community worked on various aspects of the operating system, including the kernel, file systems, and system utilities. The project also included the development of additional software and tools that extended the functionality of OpenSolaris.

The final release of OpenSolaris, version 2009.06, was made available in June 2010, and the project's website was shut down shortly thereafter.

Despite its eventual discontinuation, the OpenSolaris.org project made a significant impact on the open-source community and the development of the Solaris operating system. The project's codebase and contributions continue to influence modern operating systems, and the lessons learned from the project have informed the development of other open-source initiatives.
