Ontwerp, or design, refers to the deliberate process of planning and creating products, services, or experiences to meet defined goals within constraints such as cost, materials, time, and user needs. It combines function, aesthetics, and usability to produce solutions that are useful, desirable, and feasible to realize.

In Dutch and global contexts, ontwerp spans multiple disciplines, including product design, graphic design, industrial design, interaction design, urban design, and service design. Designers work across sectors such as consumer goods, digital media, architecture, and public policy to translate ideas into tangible outcomes.

Design processes typically involve research to understand users and context, problem framing, ideation, prototyping, testing, and refinement, followed by production and deployment. Methods such as user-centered design, design thinking, and participatory design emphasize iteration, collaboration, and evidence-informed decisions.

Historically, ontwerp developed with industrialization and mass production, evolving toward human-centered approaches in the late 20th century. Contemporary practice often prioritizes sustainability, accessibility, and ethics, balancing desirability, viability, and feasibility.

Design can influence behavior and experience, but it also faces criticism regarding bias, environmental impact, and the unequal distribution of benefits. A neutral design stance seeks to respect diverse users, minimize harm, and improve inclusivity without sacrificing clarity or quality.
