Ongata

Ongata, commonly referred to as Ongata Rongai, is a town in Kenya located in Kajiado County, just south of Nairobi. It is part of the Nairobi Metropolitan Area and lies along the Magadi Road corridor, roughly 20 kilometers southwest of Nairobi’s central business district. The town functions as a residential and commercial suburb serving both local communities and the expanding outskirts of the capital.

Geography and development: Ongata Rongai sits on the highland plains near the southern edge of Nairobi County. It evolved from rural and pastoral settlements into a suburban community as Nairobi’s urban footprint expanded during the late 20th century. Development accelerated with housing estates, retail facilities, and services to accommodate a growing resident population, while maintaining ties to surrounding rural areas.
