Onanism

Onanism is a term that has been used historically to refer to masturbation, the self-stimulation of one's genitals for sexual pleasure. The term originates from the biblical story of Onan, found in the Book of Genesis, where he is described as spilling his semen on the ground rather than impregnating his deceased brother's widow, an act which God punished. While the biblical narrative focuses on Onan's refusal to fulfill his levirate duty and the perceived wastefulness of his action, the term "onanism" later became associated with masturbation more broadly, particularly in the context of moral and medical discourse.

Throughout history, the practice of masturbation has been viewed with varying degrees of disapproval and condemnation. In some cultures and time periods, it was considered a sin, a vice, or a sign of moral weakness. Medical theories in the 18th and 19th centuries also sometimes attributed a wide range of physical and mental ailments to masturbation, though these views are not supported by modern scientific understanding.

In contemporary society, the scientific and medical consensus generally regards masturbation as a normal and healthy aspect of human sexuality, with no inherent physical or psychological harm. The term "onanism" is less commonly used today, with "masturbation" being the preferred and more neutral term.
