Oljozás

Oljozás is a Hungarian noun describing the act of applying oil to a surface or object as part of finishing, conditioning, or lubrication. The term is built from olaj, meaning oil, and the -ozás suffix, which forms action nouns. It is relatively obscure in contemporary Hungarian, and in many contexts the more common form olajozás is used to denote oiling in a general sense. In older craft and technical writings, oljozás may appear with a more specific meaning tied to a particular finishing step.

Usage and scope vary by tradition and material. Oljozás can be encountered in woodworking, leatherwork, and textile treatment, where oil serves to condition, protect, or alter the appearance of a material. Depending on the context, the term may refer to applying drying oils to slow moisture exchange, to restore suppleness, or to impart sheen. The choice of oil ranges from natural drying oils such as linseed or tung to refined vegetable oils, with recommendations largely determined by the material and desired finish.

Typical procedure (non-binding): select an oil appropriate for the material, apply a thin, even layer with a brush, cloth, or sponge, allow time for absorption, and remove any excess to avoid a sticky surface. For leather, testing on an inconspicuous spot is advised to avoid darkening or uneven results; for wood, oiling is often followed by buffing or additional finishing steps.
