Offseten

Offseten is the Dutch plural of offset, used in several fields to denote a displacement, difference, or compensating factor. The term can describe the measurable gap between two quantities, the act of balancing or countering one effect with another, or a transfer of value or position from one place to another. Because of its broad use, offseten appears in contexts such as printing, computing, statistics, finance, and geography.

In printing, offset, or offsetdruk, refers to a planographic technique in which an image is transferred from a metal plate to a rubber blanket and then to paper. The indirect transfer protects the inked plate, enabling high-quality reproduction at high speeds. Offset printing is widely used for books, newspapers, magazines, and packaging. Common variants include sheet-fed offset and web offset.

In computing and data processing, an offset is a displacement used to locate data within a structure or memory. An element’s address is typically the sum of a base address and an offset. Offsets are central to pointer arithmetic, array indexing, and file formats that reference positions relative to a starting point.

Other domains use offset in different ways. In statistics and epidemiology, an offset term in a generalized linear model can account for exposure or population size. In finance, offsetting positions reduces net risk by closing or hedging trades. In geography and GIS, offset describes a parallel line or boundary at a fixed distance from another feature.
