Odontria

Odontria is a genus of beetles in the family Anobiidae, commonly known as deathwatch beetles. These small, brown or black beetles are characterized by their cylindrical bodies and ability to produce a ticking sound by striking their heads against wood or other surfaces. This behavior, often audible in quiet environments, is used for communication, particularly for attracting mates.

The larvae of Odontria beetles are wood-boring insects. They feed on decaying wood, and their presence can indicate the presence of rot or structural damage in timber. While some species are considered pests, particularly in buildings and furniture, others play a role in the decomposition of dead wood in natural ecosystems.

Several species of Odontria are found worldwide, with a significant diversity present in various regions. Their life cycle typically involves an egg stage, followed by a larval stage that can last for several years, a pupal stage, and finally the adult beetle. The adult beetles are relatively short-lived, their primary function being reproduction. The characteristic ticking sound is most often produced by the adult males. The name "deathwatch beetle" is derived from the superstition that the ticking sound foretells death.
