Oberflächenrisse

Oberflächenrisse, also known as surface cracks, are discontinuities that extend only partially through the thickness of a material's surface. They are typically observed in various materials, including metals, ceramics, polymers, and composites, and can arise from a multitude of causes.

In metals, surface cracks can be initiated by fatigue loading, stress corrosion cracking, or manufacturing defects. Fatigue cracks often originate at stress concentrations like microscopic surface irregularities or inclusions. Stress corrosion cracking occurs when a susceptible material is exposed to a corrosive environment under tensile stress. Manufacturing processes such as welding, grinding, or heat treatment can also introduce residual stresses that lead to the formation of surface cracks.

For polymers, surface cracks can be a consequence of environmental factors like UV radiation, thermal cycling, or chemical attack. Mechanical stress, particularly during bending or impact, can also cause surface cracking. In ceramics, which are inherently brittle, surface flaws are a major concern, as they can propagate into catastrophic failure under relatively low loads. These flaws can be introduced during processing or handling. Composites may exhibit surface cracking due to delamination, fiber breakage, or matrix cracking, often influenced by impact or fatigue.

The detection and characterization of surface cracks are crucial for ensuring the structural integrity and reliability of components. Various non-destructive testing (NDT) methods, such as visual inspection, dye penetrant testing, eddy current testing, and ultrasonic testing, are employed for their identification. Understanding the origin and propagation mechanisms of surface cracks is essential for designing more robust materials and structures and for implementing effective preventative maintenance strategies.
