Oakmere

Oakmere is a village and civil parish in the rural county of Northvale, Westland. It sits on the banks of the Oakmere River, about 12 kilometers southeast of Brindle, the nearest market town. The parish covers about four square kilometers and is largely agricultural, with hedgerows and a small woodland known as Oakmere Wood. The population is estimated at roughly 1,150.

History and landmarks: The area has medieval origins, with St. Mary’s Church dating to the 12th century and undergoing later restorations. Oakmere Hall, an 18th-century country house, is a notable estate within the parish. The arrival of a regional railway in the 19th century briefly spurred growth, but passenger services on the line ended in the mid-20th century.

Governance: Oakmere is governed locally by a parish council and is part of the East Northshire district and Northvale county for higher-tier services. Elections to the parish council occur every four years.

Economy and community: Agriculture remains the main economic activity, centered on dairy and arable farming. A small number of shops, workshops, and a pub serve residents. The village maintains a hall that hosts community events and meetings.

Transport and services: The village is connected by a network of rural roads and regular bus services to Brindle. The nearest rail link is in Brindle; there is no current direct passenger service in Oakmere. Education is provided by Oakmere Primary School, with secondary schooling accessed in Brindle.

Notable people: The parish has been home to various residents over the years, including the 19th-century writer Jane Cole.
