This is distinct from Information Technology (IT), which focuses on data processing and communication. OTarchitecturen are crucial for industries such as manufacturing, energy, transportation, and utilities, where reliable and secure operation of physical systems is paramount.

Key considerations in OTarchitecturen include the integration of diverse industrial control systems (ICS), supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems, distributed control systems (DCS), and programmable logic controllers (PLCs).
