ODEyhtälöt, known in English as Ordinary Differential Equations (ODEs), are mathematical equations that involve an unknown function and its derivatives. Specifically, they relate a function of one independent variable to its ordinary derivatives with respect to that variable. This means that the derivatives involved are not partial derivatives, which would imply functions of multiple independent variables.

The order of a differential equation is determined by the highest order derivative present. For instance, an equation containing a second derivative but no higher derivatives is a second-order ODE. ODEs are fundamental in many scientific and engineering disciplines because they can model a vast array of phenomena. Examples include the motion of objects under gravity, the spread of diseases, the flow of heat, and the behavior of electrical circuits.

Solving ODEs can be a complex task. Some ODEs can be solved analytically, meaning an explicit formula for the unknown function can be found. However, many ODEs do not have simple analytical solutions and require numerical methods to approximate the solutions. These numerical methods involve approximating the function at discrete points, often using algorithms such as Euler's method or Runge-Kutta methods. The study and application of ODEs form a significant branch of mathematics and applied science.
