Nærhetsforespørsler, sometimes translated as proximity queries or nearest neighbor searches, are a fundamental concept in computer science and data analysis. They involve finding data points within a dataset that are closest to a given reference point or query point. The definition of "closeness" is typically determined by a distance metric, such as Euclidean distance, Manhattan distance, or cosine similarity, depending on the nature of the data and the problem being solved.

These types of queries are crucial in a wide array of applications. In geographical information systems (GIS), they are used to find the nearest store, restaurant, or landmark to a user's current location. In recommendation systems, they help identify items or users similar to a target item or user, forming the basis for personalized suggestions. Image retrieval systems employ proximity queries to find images that are visually similar to a query image. Similarly, in natural language processing, they can be used to find similar words or documents.

Efficiently executing proximity queries, especially on large datasets, is a significant challenge. Naive approaches that involve calculating the distance to every data point can be computationally expensive. Therefore, various indexing structures and algorithms have been developed to optimize these searches. Common techniques include k-d trees, ball trees, and locality-sensitive hashing (LSH). These methods aim to reduce the number of distance calculations required by organizing the data in a way that allows for faster pruning of irrelevant data points. The performance of these techniques often depends on the dimensionality of the data and the chosen distance metric.
