Näyttöpäätteet, often translated as display terminals or simply screens, refer to the devices used to output visual information from a computer or other electronic system. Historically, this term encompassed a wide range of devices, from early text-based terminals connected to mainframe computers to the more sophisticated graphical user interface (GUI) displays of personal computers. The primary function of a näyttöpääte is to present data and allow user interaction through visual cues.

In their simplest form, early näyttöpäätteet were purely output devices, often consisting of a cathode ray tube (CRT) and a keyboard. These terminals transmitted and received data over serial connections, displaying text characters generated by a central processing unit.
