Näkökalkki

Näkökalkki is a Finnish term that translates to "viewing lime" or "sight lime." It refers to a traditional method of using a specific type of lime plaster on interior walls and ceilings, particularly in older Finnish farmhouses and rural dwellings. This lime plaster was not merely a decorative finish but served practical purposes.

The primary function of näkökalkki was to reflect light, thus brightening interiors that often had small windows and limited natural illumination. The lime itself, when mixed and applied, would create a smooth, white surface that bounced light around the room effectively. This made the living spaces feel more open and less gloomy.
