Nyálkahártyapolipok, commonly known as mucosal polyps, are abnormal growths that arise from the lining of mucous membranes. These membranes are found in various parts of the body, including the respiratory tract, gastrointestinal tract, and genitourinary tract. While often benign, they can sometimes indicate underlying conditions or, in rare cases, develop into malignant tumors.

The formation of polyps is believed to be related to chronic inflammation, irritation, or genetic predisposition. In the nasal cavity, nasal polyps can cause symptoms such as nasal congestion, reduced sense of smell, and postnasal drip. In the gastrointestinal tract, particularly in the colon, polyps can be asymptomatic but are a significant concern due to their potential for cancerous transformation. Symptoms may include rectal bleeding, changes in bowel habits, and abdominal pain.

Diagnosis of mucosal polyps typically involves medical imaging, such as endoscopy for gastrointestinal polyps or nasal endoscopy for nasal polyps. Biopsies are often performed to determine the exact nature of the growth and rule out malignancy. Treatment strategies vary depending on the location, size, and type of polyp. Small, asymptomatic polyps may be monitored, while larger or symptomatic polyps, especially those with precancerous or cancerous potential, are usually surgically removed. Regular screening, particularly for colorectal polyps, is crucial for early detection and prevention of colon cancer.
