Nuotiot

Nuotiot are outdoor fires built for warmth, cooking, and social gatherings. The term comes from Finnish nuotio, meaning campfire, and the plural nuotiot is used for multiple fires. They are commonly lit in forests, on lakeshores, at campsites, and in backyards, especially during outdoor activities.

A typical nuotio is built in a prepared area with a fire pit or ring of stones and clear ground around it. The fuel is usually dry wood, such as birch or pine, sometimes supplemented by charcoal. Flames are contained to the pit or ring to reduce the risk of spread. Size and construction are influenced by local rules and the availability of water for extinguishing.

Safety and regulations: Always check local fire regulations and weather conditions. Keep water or sand nearby, never leave a nuotio unattended, and extinguish it completely before leaving. Do not build fires near dry vegetation, structures, or under low-hanging branches. Only light fires in designated areas where permitted.

Environmental considerations: Properly managed fires provide warmth and a focal point for social activity but can harm vegetation and wildlife if misused. In dry seasons or protected areas, fires may be prohibited.
