Nullpfad

Nullpfad is a German-language term that translates roughly as “null path” or “zero-length path.” In technical literature it is used in several disciplines to denote a degenerate or trivial notion of a path, and its precise meaning depends on the context. In many sources it refers to a path with no length, serving as a simple or base case in formal definitions.

In mathematics and graph theory, a common interpretation of the null path is the path of length zero from a vertex to itself. This is often called the trivial path and serves as the identity element for concatenation of paths. Some authors distinguish between a trivial path (a path consisting of a single vertex) and an empty path (a sequence with no vertices); conventions vary by author or subfield.

In physics, especially in special and general relativity, a related concept is a null or light-like path, sometimes discussed in German as a Nullpfad. Such paths are worldlines along which the spacetime interval is zero (ds^2 = 0) and are the routes along which light propagates. These null paths define the causal structure of spacetime and are distinguished from timelike and spacelike paths.

In computing and algorithmic contexts, the idea of a null path can appear as a degenerate or placeholder solution, for example a path consisting of no edges, representing no movement or an undefined route. However, terminology in computer science more commonly uses explicit terms like “empty path” or “null value” rather than the label Nullpfad.
