Northfjord

Northfjord is a fjord on the northern coast of Nordlandia, a fictional Northern Hemisphere country. The fjord runs from an inner glacial basin to the open sea, extending about 55 kilometers. Its sides are formed by high, steep cliffs and are fringed with boreal forest at higher elevations. The inner depths reach several hundred meters, and the water remains cold and clear most of the year.

Glacial activity during the last Ice Age carved the valley, resulting in a long, narrow inlet with a shallow sill near the mouth that influences tidal exchange. Rivers draining from surrounding highlands deliver fresh water and nutrients, supporting productive estuarine zones at the heads of its coves.

Ecology and economy: The fjord hosts harbor seals, porpoises, and seabirds such as cormorants and gulls. Fish species include cod and herring, with salmon returning to nearby streams in season. Local communities rely on small-scale fishing, aquaculture, and increasingly, nature-based tourism, including boat tours, hiking, and winter sports in higher areas.

Settlement and access: Several small settlements lie along the fjord, the largest providing basic services to residents and visitors. The region is served by a coastal road network and a seasonal ferry service across the mouth; the nearest airport is in the regional capital across the fjord, with road or ferry connections required.

Name and history: The name Northfjord reflects its position relative to the surrounding coast and Nordic historical influences. The fjord has long been used for fishing and trade, with settlement patterns centered on natural harbors and sheltered coves since medieval times.
