Normoinnin

Normoinnin is the Finnish term for normalization, the process of adjusting values to a common scale or standard to enable comparison, analysis, or integration across different datasets, representations, or domains. It is used in mathematics, statistics, computer science, and information processing, and may refer to different specific techniques depending on the field.

In mathematics, normointi often means converting a vector to a unit vector by dividing it by its length, the norm. This yields a vector with length one that preserves direction. More broadly, it can refer to aligning quantities to a standard norm or unit.

In data analysis, normointi includes methods such as min-max normalization, which rescales features to a fixed range, and z-score standardization, which centers data around zero with unit variance. Robust scaling is another approach that reduces the influence of outliers. These procedures help ensure features contribute comparably in analyses and models and can improve numerical stability.
