Nonresorbable

Nonresorbable describes materials or devices that are not broken down and absorbed by biological tissues after implantation. In clinical and biomaterials contexts, nonresorbable products are intended to provide long-term or permanent structural support, fixation, or separation where ongoing mechanical strength is required.

Common examples include metals (titanium, stainless steel), certain polymers (polytetrafluoroethylene, polyethylene, polypropylene), ceramics, and nonabsorbable suture materials (silk, nylon, polyester). These materials are used for orthopedic implants, dental fixtures, vascular grafts, surgical meshes, and permanent sutures or membranes. Choice of a nonresorbable device is driven by needs for durability, predictable mechanical properties, and stability over time.

Advantages of nonresorbable materials include lasting mechanical support and avoidance of degradation-related changes in strength or byproducts. Risks and considerations include chronic foreign-body reaction, infection, palpability or irritation, potential migration, interference with imaging, and the occasional need for surgical removal if complications arise. Biocompatibility testing, sterilization, and careful surgical technique are important to minimize adverse outcomes.

Alternatives include resorbable or bioabsorbable materials that gradually degrade and are replaced by tissue. The decision to use nonresorbable versus resorbable options depends on clinical goals, patient factors, and the expected timeline for tissue healing and function.
