Noncisgender

Noncisgender is a term used to describe people whose gender identity does not align with the sex they were assigned at birth. It is commonly seen as an umbrella label for individuals who are not cisgender, including those who identify as transgender, nonbinary, genderqueer, agender, genderfluid, bigender, and other identities that do not match the birth-assigned sex. The term emphasizes the lack of alignment with the gender presumed at birth rather than defining a single identity.

In practice, noncisgender can be used in sociological research, advocacy, and community discourse to discuss the experiences and needs of people outside cisnormativity. It is not a clinical term and is chosen for its descriptive or political utility rather than a medical diagnosis. Some people may prefer more specific labels such as transgender or nonbinary, while others adopt noncisgender to capture a broader range of identities.

Cisgender refers to individuals whose gender identity corresponds to the sex assigned at birth. Noncisgender, therefore, identifies those who do not share that alignment. The umbrella approach can help highlight common social experiences, such as exposure to discrimination or policy gaps, while acknowledging a diversity of personal identities within the noncis spectrum.
