Nonadmission

Nonadmission refers to the act of not granting entry or participation to an individual or entity seeking admission to an institution, program, facility, or status. It is distinct from withdrawal after admission and from voluntary departure; nonadmission is an initial decision not to admit.

In education and training, nonadmission covers denial of admission to schools, colleges, or programs. Decisions are typically based on eligibility criteria, prior academic records, standardized requirements, capacity limits, and sometimes disciplinary history. Applicants are informed of the decision and may have options such as waitlisting, appeal, or reapplication in a future term.

In health care and social services, nonadmission occurs when a patient or client is not admitted to a hospital unit, specialty program, or long-term care facility. Reasons include clinical criteria, resource constraints, or alternative dispositions such as outpatient care or observation status. Hospitals ordinarily document the rationale and applicable policies, and may review decisions if appropriate.

In immigration and border control contexts, nonadmission denotes refusal of entry or asylum at a port of entry, often based on eligibility, admissibility, or public health and security considerations. Legal rights to review or appeal vary by jurisdiction.
