It denotes a lineage in which the sensibilities of noir—moral ambiguity, urban paranoia, crime and corruption—are reinterpreted for later periods and across media. The label is informal and not uniformly defined, with critics applying it in varying degrees of emphasis on mood, narrative approach, and visual style.

Core characteristics typically associated with noirderived include a morally ambiguous or antihero protagonist, a crime or conspiracy at the center of the plot, and a prevailing sense of cynicism and fatalism. Visually, the works may employ chiaroscuro lighting, urban nightscapes, and a pall of moral disillusion. Narration, flashbacks, and layered, sometimes non-linear storytelling are common, as are themes of paranoia, distrust, and compromised ethics.

Origins and usage: Although traditional noir originated in mid-20th-century cinema, noirderived is used to describe later films, literary works, comics, and games that echo noir aesthetics in contemporary contexts. The term often overlaps with neo-noir, dark realism, and other related labels, and some critics reserve noirderived for works that explicitly engage noir motifs rather than merely adopting a somber mood.
