The distinction between these fibers allows the nervous system to differentiate between different qualities and intensities of pain.

Nociceptor activation is modulated by various factors, including the presence of inflammatory mediators such as prostaglandins, which can sensitize these receptors and enhance pain perception during injury or inflammation.
