Nitröryhmäs, also known as the nitro group, is a functional group in organic chemistry with the chemical formula NO2. It is a univalent group, meaning it is attached to the rest of a molecule by a single bond. The nitro group is characterized by a nitrogen atom bonded to two oxygen atoms. One bond is a double bond, and the other is a single bond which carries a formal negative charge, while the nitrogen atom carries a formal positive charge. This arrangement results in a highly polar and electron-withdrawing group.

The nitro group is a common substituent found in many organic compounds. Its presence significantly influences the chemical and physical properties of a molecule. For instance, it is strongly electron-withdrawing, which can affect the reactivity of adjacent atoms or groups. This electron-withdrawing effect can make the molecule more acidic or alter its susceptibility to nucleophilic or electrophilic attack.

Important examples of nitro compounds include nitrobenzene, nitromethane, and trinitrotoluene (TNT).

Nitro compounds have diverse applications. Many are used as explosives, such as TNT, due to the inherent instability and rapid release of energy associated with the nitro group. Others are intermediates in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, dyes, and pesticides. For example, aniline, a crucial precursor in many industrial processes, is produced by the reduction of nitrobenzene. The nitro group itself can also be reduced to an amino group, a common transformation in organic synthesis.
