Nitrogénértéket, often translated as nitrogen value, is a term used in agriculture and soil science to express the amount of nitrogen available in a substance, typically organic matter or fertilizer, for plant uptake. It is a crucial metric for understanding nutrient management and optimizing crop yields. The nitrogen value is not a simple measure of total nitrogen content but rather reflects the portion of that nitrogen that can be converted into a form usable by plants, such as ammonium or nitrate, through biological processes.

Different organic materials have varying nitrogen values. For instance, fresh plant residues, manure, and compost all contain nitrogen, but its availability to plants differs based on the material's composition and the stage of decomposition. For example, materials with a high carbon-to-nitrogen ratio tend to release nitrogen more slowly as they decompose, while those with a lower ratio may release nitrogen more rapidly. Fertilizers are formulated to provide readily available nitrogen, and their nitrogen value is often directly indicated by their label, typically as a percentage of nitrogen by weight.

Accurate assessment of nitrogen value is essential for determining appropriate fertilizer application rates and for managing organic amendments. Over-application can lead to environmental issues like nitrogen leaching into waterways, while under-application can result in nutrient deficiencies and reduced crop productivity.
