Nikkelipäällysteet, commonly known as nickel plating, is an electrochemical process used to deposit a thin layer of nickel onto a metal substrate. This coating serves various purposes, including corrosion resistance, wear resistance, and decorative appeal. The process typically involves immersing the object to be plated into an electrolytic bath containing nickel salts. An electric current is then passed through the solution, causing nickel ions to reduce and deposit onto the object, which acts as the cathode.

There are two primary types of nickel plating: electroless nickel plating and electroplating. Electroplating relies on an external electrical current to drive the deposition. Electroless nickel plating, on the other hand, uses a chemical reaction to deposit the nickel layer without an external power source, often resulting in a more uniform coating, especially on complex shapes.

Nickel plating is widely used across numerous industries. In the automotive sector, it enhances the durability and appearance of components like bumpers, grilles, and trim. The electronics industry utilizes nickel plating for connectors and circuit boards to improve conductivity and prevent corrosion. In the aerospace industry, it provides protection against extreme conditions and wear. Decorative applications include plating on hardware, jewelry, and plumbing fixtures to achieve a bright, lustrous finish.

The thickness and properties of the nickel layer can be controlled by adjusting parameters such as current density, bath composition, temperature, and plating time. Different types of nickel plating baths can yield distinct properties, such as bright nickel for aesthetic finishes or hard nickel for wear resistance. Proper preparation of the substrate surface is crucial for good adhesion and the overall quality of the nickel coating.
