Nichtzielembolisation

Nichtzielembolisation, also known as non-target embolization, refers to the unintended embolization of blood vessels or tissues during an embolization procedure. This medical complication occurs when embolic agents, such as particles or coils, migrate to areas outside the intended target region.

The procedure typically involves the selective catheterization of an artery or vein to deliver embolic material that blocks blood flow to a specific area, often for therapeutic purposes like tumor treatment or vascular malformation management. However, technical errors, catheter malposition, or inadequate embolic agent control can lead to non-target embolization.

Clinical consequences vary depending on the affected area and the extent of the embolization. They may range from minor complications to severe outcomes, including tissue ischemia, organ dysfunction, or permanent damage. Prevention strategies include careful patient selection, precise catheter positioning, and the use of appropriate embolic agents with controlled release characteristics.
