New York, officially the State of New York, is a northeastern U.S. state. It is bordered by New Jersey and Pennsylvania to the south, Vermont, Massachusetts, and Connecticut to the east, and the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec to the north. The capital is Albany, and the largest city is New York City, a global hub for finance, media, and culture. Other major urban centers include Buffalo, Rochester, and Syracuse.

Geography ranges from the Atlantic coast and the Hudson Valley to the Adirondack and Catskill Mountains and the Great Lakes region around Buffalo. The state includes parts of the Finger Lakes and Champlain Valley.

Indigenous peoples, notably the Iroquois, inhabited the area before European colonization. The Dutch established New Netherland in the 17th century; the English renamed it New York. The state ratified the U.S. Constitution in 1788, and the Erie Canal (1825) linked the Great Lakes to the Atlantic, fueling growth.

New York has a large, diversified economy, with finance, information technology, healthcare, manufacturing, and tourism. The state hosts a diverse population and strong higher education, including Columbia, Cornell, and the University at Buffalo.

Governed as a constitutional republic, it has a governor and a bicameral legislature based in Albany. State symbols include the motto Excelsior; the rose (flower), eastern bluebird (bird), and sugar maple (tree).

New York City anchors a global cultural scene with Broadway and museums. Notable landmarks include the Statue of Liberty, Niagara Falls, and Adirondack Park. The state also features Hudson Valley and Long Island agriculture, the Catskills and Adirondacks for recreation, and extensive transport networks.
