Neutroocclusion

Neutroocclusion is a term used in dentistry to describe a normal, or ideal, dental occlusion in which the upper and lower teeth meet in proper alignment. The term is sometimes written as neutro-occlusion and is often treated as synonymous with normal occlusion or neutroclusion in older literature. In many contexts, neutroocclusion is associated with a Class I molar relationship, where the mesiobuccal cusp of the maxillary first molar sits in the mesiobuccal groove of the mandibular first molar, along with a well-balanced bite.

Key characteristics of neutroocclusion include an overjet and overbite that fall within physiologic limits, well-aligned dental arches, and stable intercuspation without significant crowding, spacing, crossbite, or midline deviation. A neutral bite typically allows efficient chewing and speech and does not require corrective orthodontic treatment.

Diagnosis is based on a clinical examination and occlusal analysis, often supplemented by dental impressions, radiographs, and, when available, study models to confirm proper molar relationships and occlusal harmony. Because neutroocclusion denotes normal alignment, it generally does not require orthodontic intervention beyond routine dental care, though minor irregularities may be monitored or managed as needed.

Differences from malocclusion are central to its relevance: malocclusions such as Class II and Class III deviations, crowding, or crossbites are treated when they affect function or aesthetics, whereas neutroocclusion represents the baseline of normal dental alignment.
