Neutrontiire

Neutrontiire is a fictional material described in speculative physics and science fiction narratives. It is imagined as a neutron-rich crystalline solid formed by embedding a high concentration of neutron-rich isotopes within a stable host lattice, producing a material whose interaction with neutrons is markedly different from ordinary solids.

In proposed models, neutrontiire exhibits high neutron capture cross-sections, substantial radiation shielding potential, and unusual thermal behavior under irradiation. The exact crystal structure is variable in different works, commonly pictured as a dense ceramic or intermetallic with a cubic or perovskite-like framework. The material's properties depend on the balance of neutron-rich isotopes and the lattice not collapsing under transmutation damage.

Normally produced by exposing precursor materials to intense neutron flux in a reactor or spallation source, inducing transmutations that accumulate neutron-rich isotopes. Rapid quenching or lattice stabilization steps are often described to preserve the structure against radiogenic damage. In many depictions, the process is technically challenging and expensive.

Used as a theoretical neutron moderator, shield, or energy storage medium in fictional advanced reactors, or as a plot device to explore radiological or materials science limits. Real-world physics does not recognize neutrontiire as a real substance.

In fiction, neutrontiire would pose radiation hazards from unstable isotopes, with decay heat and biohazard concerns; in real life, such material would be subject to strict regulatory control and long-term waste management.
