Neuroszerzés, commonly known as neurogenesis, refers to the biological process by which new neurons (nerve cells) are formed in the brain. This phenomenon was long believed to occur only during embryonic development, but research in the late 20th century demonstrated that neurogenesis also takes place in certain regions of the adult brain. The primary sites of adult neurogenesis in humans are the subventricular zone (SVZ), which lines the lateral ventricles, and the subgranular zone (SGZ) of the hippocampal dentate gyrus.

The process of neurogenesis involves several stages, including the proliferation of neural stem cells, their differentiation into immature neurons, and their eventual integration into existing neural circuits. These newly formed neurons play roles in various cognitive functions, including learning, memory, and emotional regulation. The hippocampus, in particular, is associated with memory formation, and neurogenesis in this region is thought to contribute to the brain's ability to adapt and respond to new experiences.

Several factors influence neurogenesis, including environmental stimuli, physical exercise, and certain hormones. For instance, voluntary physical activity, such as running, has been shown to increase neurogenesis in the hippocampus. Additionally, stress, sleep deprivation, and certain medications can either promote or inhibit the process. Research also suggests that neurogenesis may decline with age, potentially contributing to cognitive decline in older adults.

Neuroszerzés holds significant implications for understanding neurological disorders, such as depression, anxiety, and neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's. Targeting neurogenesis through therapeutic interventions, such as antidepressants or lifestyle modifications, is an active area of scientific investigation.
