Neuropteris
Neuropteris is an extinct genus of seed ferns that lived during the Carboniferous period. These plants are primarily known from fossilized leaves, which are abundant in coal deposits. The name Neuropteris comes from Greek words meaning "nerve fern," referring to the characteristic venation pattern of its fronds.
The fronds of Neuropteris were typically pinnately compound, meaning they were divided into smaller leaflets (pinnae)
Neuropteris plants were likely trees or shrubs, contributing significantly to the dense forests of the Carboniferous.
Fossilized Neuropteris leaves are important index fossils, helping paleontologists date rock formations from the Carboniferous period.
