Neurometrics is the practice of quantifying brain function by deriving standardized metrics from neural signals in order to predict and describe cognitive processes, behaviors, or psychological traits. Common data sources include electrophysiological measures such as electroencephalography (EEG) and event-related potentials (ERPs); magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques such as functional MRI (fMRI) and diffusion MRI; magnetoencephalography (MEG); and near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). Analysts employ statistical modeling and machine learning to relate neural features to behavioral outcomes, often requiring large, diverse datasets and normative baselines.

Applications appear in cognitive neuroscience research, clinical assessment of neurological or psychiatric conditions, and education or training contexts. In some settings, neurometrics have been proposed for performance prediction or personalized intervention, though practical use is typically probabilistic and context dependent rather than deterministic.

Critiques focus on reliability, validity, ecological relevance, and the risk of overinterpretation or bias. Ethical concerns include privacy, informed consent, data security, and potential misuse in hiring, surveillance, or discriminatory practices. Standardization, transparency, and appropriate regulatory oversight are frequently discussed as the field evolves.
