Neurochemists are scientists who study the chemical processes and substances within the nervous system, including the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves. Their research focuses on how neurotransmitters—chemical messengers that transmit signals between neurons—and other biochemical compounds influence neural function, behavior, and physiological processes. By examining these mechanisms, neurochemists contribute to understanding neurological and psychiatric disorders, as well as normal brain development and aging.
