Netherby

Netherby is a village and civil parish in Cumbria, England, located near the Solway Firth and the Anglo-Scottish border. It is situated approximately 3 miles west of Longtown and 8 miles north of Carlisle. The area is largely agricultural, characterized by rolling hills and farmland.

Historically, Netherby has been an important location due to its proximity to the Roman Hadrian's Wall. The remains of a significant Roman fort, also named Netherby, are located in the vicinity. This fort, known to the Romans as Castra Exploratorum, served as a base for scout troops and was strategically positioned to monitor the northern frontier. Archaeological excavations have uncovered evidence of Roman occupation, including bathhouses, barracks, and artifacts. The famous Vindolanda tablets, a collection of Roman writing tablets, were discovered nearby, providing invaluable insights into daily life during the Roman period.

The modern village of Netherby itself is relatively small. The parish church, St. Cuthbert's, is a notable historical building with parts dating back to the medieval period. The surrounding landscape offers opportunities for walking and exploring the historical sites.
