Neoprenets

Neoprenets are a class of flexible, mesh-like materials built from neoprene polymers designed to function as integrated network systems. The term appears in materials science and wearable technology to describe elastomeric nets that combine mechanical resilience with selective permeability and, in enhanced forms, embedded sensing, actuation, or data pathways.

Composition and structure: Neoprenets typically consist of a neoprene matrix knit or laminated with reinforcing fibers, conductive threads, or microelectronic traces. Manufacturing methods include knitting and weaving into lattice structures, lamination of neoprene sheets with printed circuits, and 3D-printed elastomer networks. The resulting materials retain elasticity and water resistance while providing internal network pathways for signals or fluids.

Properties and variants: Standard neoprenets emphasize elasticity, abrasion resistance, and aquatic durability. Smart variants integrate conductive elements to enable strain sensing, capacitive sensing, or thermal mapping. They can be engineered for buoyancy, insulation, or chemical resistance, depending on formulation and fillers.

Applications: Potential uses include protective sports gear and wetsuits with integrated monitoring, marine equipment and underwater sensors, soft robotics that require compliant grippers with embedded sensing, and wearable environmental monitors suited to wet or humid conditions.

Limitations: Costs, manufacturing complexity, and recycling challenges can impede widespread adoption. Performance may degrade with repeated high strain, UV exposure, or chemical contact, and compatibility with other materials and assembly processes remains an active area of development.
