Nemipteridae

Nemipteridae is a family of marine ray-finned fish, commonly known as threadfin breams. These fish are found in the Indo-Pacific region, inhabiting tropical and subtropical waters. They are typically benthic, living near the seabed in sandy or muddy areas, often in depths ranging from 10 to 200 meters.

Threadfin breams are characterized by their relatively small to medium size, with most species measuring between 10 and 30 centimeters in length. A distinctive feature is the presence of two to four, or sometimes more, filamentous fin rays extending from the anterior part of the dorsal fin. These filaments are often longer in juveniles and can be used for sensory purposes or to attract prey. Their coloration varies, but many species display silvery or sandy hues, providing camouflage against their bottom-dwelling environment.

The diet of Nemipteridae primarily consists of small invertebrates such as crustaceans, mollusks, and polychaete worms, which they forage for on the seafloor. Some species may also consume small fish. They are important components of the marine food web and are also of commercial value in many parts of their range, being caught for food.

The family Nemipteridae comprises several genera, including Nemipterus, Scolopsis, and Synagrops, with numerous species described within each. Their reproductive strategies generally involve external fertilization, with eggs and larvae being pelagic. They are generally considered to be of low conservation concern, though localized populations may be affected by habitat degradation and overfishing.
