Nelikerroksiset

Nelikerroksiset refers to a Finnish architectural style characterized by buildings with four stories. This design became particularly prevalent in urban areas during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a period of significant population growth and industrialization in Finland. These structures often housed a mix of residential apartments and commercial spaces on the ground floor, a common arrangement for maximizing land use in developing cities like Helsinki, Turku, and Tampere.

The construction of nelikerroksiset buildings typically involved load-bearing brick walls, with wooden floors and ceilings. Facades often displayed elements of Art Nouveau or national romanticism, reflecting the prevailing aesthetic trends of the era. Features such as decorative window frames, patterned brickwork, and sometimes even turrets or balconies were common. The interiors usually featured high ceilings, spacious rooms, and often ornate detailing in plasterwork and woodwork. Many of these buildings have been preserved and are considered important examples of Finnish architectural heritage, still serving their original purpose as residential and commercial properties. The term itself, "nelikerroksiset," is simply the Finnish word for "four-storied."
