Nederst

Nederst is a fictional municipality in the northern region of Veloria. Located in the Neder River valley, the municipality covers about 42 square kilometers and features a mix of farmland, wetlands, and wooded hills. The climate is temperate with relatively mild winters.

The area shows evidence of settlement dating to the 12th century. Nederst was incorporated as a municipality in 1832. After 1850, mills powered by the Neder River supported local industry, and an early railway project influenced growth, though the line was never completed.

Nederst is governed by a mayor and a seven-member council elected for four-year terms. It belongs to the Velorian regional district and relies on local taxes and regional grants for public services.

The economy centers on agriculture—grain and dairy—along with small-scale manufacturing and tourism related to nature reserves and historical sites. The transportation network comprises regional roads and bus services; a rail link to larger cities is not present.

As of 2023, Nederst has about 4,200 residents. The population is predominantly Velorian, with small immigrant communities. The municipality supports cultural events such as an annual Harvest Festival and a local crafts fair; education is provided by a primary and a secondary school.

Notable sites include Nederst Gorge, a scenic overlook along the river, and the Nederst Barrier Wetland Reserve, a protected area that hosts birdlife and wetland flora. These sites attract hikers, birdwatchers, and conservationists.
