Nectarstromen

Nectarstromen is a term used in botany to describe the flow and pathways of nectar within and from the nectaries of flowering plants. The concept covers both the physical channels that transport nectar inside a flower and the dynamic process of nectar secretion and release that makes nectar available to pollinators.

Nectar is produced by specialized secretory tissues, often located at the base of floral organs or within nectariferous glands. The nectar moves through small ducts or intercellular spaces to a nectar chamber or spur, where it becomes accessible to visiting insects or birds. The movement is driven by physical and physiological factors such as osmotic gradients, pressure differences, evaporation, temperature, and humidity, and it can be influenced by the timing of pollinator activity.

Variation is common among species. Some flowers secrete nectar continuously for hours, while others release it in pulses that align with peak pollinator visits. Nectar volumes and concentrations differ widely, affecting pollinator choices and foraging efficiency. The structure of the floral spur or nectary arrangement often shapes the accessibility of nectar and thus the pollination strategy of the plant.

Ecologically, nectarstromen play a key role in plant–pollinator interactions. Nectar production is energetically costly for plants, leading to trade-offs with other traits such as scent, color, and floral display. Understanding nectarstromen helps explain how flowers optimize nectar availability to attract specific pollinators and maximize reproductive success.
