Necrontyr

The Necrontyr are an ancient humanoid species within the Warhammer 40,000 universe. They originated in the early galaxy era and lived in a variety of star systems, often under harsh stellar conditions. Their biology and life processes were shaped by a relatively short natural lifespan, a circumstance that influenced their cultural and technological development.

Seeking lasting immortality, the Necrontyr entered into a pact with the C'tan, powerful star-worhsipping beings. Through the process of biotransference, Necrontyr consciousnesses were transferred into robotic, necrodermis bodies, while the C'tan took residence in the bodies’ crystalline shells or bonded with them. The transformation produced a new, machine-based race: the Necrons. The change granted immense longevity and resilience, but at the cost of much of their former organic emotion.

With their new forms, the Necrontyr built a vast empire and fought across the galaxy, including conflicts that formed the legendary War in Heaven against rival civilizations such as the Old Ones. After a protracted and devastating war, the Necrons entered a long period of dormancy known as the Great Sleep, retreating to tomb worlds where their dynastic fortresses preserved both body and knowledge.

In the current era of the 41st millennium, the Necrons are reawakening in scattered dynasties. They employ large, purpose-built war machines, from tomb complexes to monoliths, and pursue the restoration of their ancient dominion. Leadership tends to be organized around over-lords and dynastic councils, with a focus on efficiency and strategic planning rather than emotion. Their reemergence presents a deliberate, inexorable challenge to other galactic powers.
