First introduced in the 1987 supplement The North: A Continent Reborn, they are depicted as a reclusive, nomadic people who dwell in the frozen northern regions of the world, particularly in the lands of the Icewind Dale and beyond. The name "Necaptrii" is derived from the Elvish phrase Necaptri, meaning "the frozen ones," reflecting their adaptation to harsh Arctic climates.
