Naturschiefer

Naturschiefer, commonly known as slate, is a fine-grained, foliated, metamorphic rock that has been widely used for roofing, flooring, and writing surfaces throughout history. It forms from the metamorphism of mudstone or shale under low-grade regional metamorphism, typically at temperatures and pressures that do not cause melting. The process involves the recrystallization of minerals, particularly clay minerals, which realign parallel to the direction of pressure, giving slate its characteristic foliated texture.

One of the defining features of Naturschiefer is its ability to split easily into thin, flat sheets along these planes of alignment, a property known as cleavage. This makes it highly versatile for construction and artistic purposes.
