Nasenuntersuchung, also known as rhinoscopy, is a medical examination of the nasal cavity. It is performed by healthcare professionals, typically doctors or veterinarians, to diagnose and evaluate conditions affecting the nose. The examination can be performed using a variety of instruments and techniques.

A basic external examination might involve simply looking at the nose to assess its shape, symmetry, and for any visible abnormalities like swelling or discharge. More detailed examination often requires specialized equipment. Rhinoscope, a type of endoscope, is commonly used. This instrument is a flexible or rigid tube with a light source and a camera, allowing for a magnified view of the internal structures of the nose, including the nasal passages, septum, and turbinates.

During a nasenuntersuchung, the healthcare provider will look for signs of inflammation, infection, polyps, tumors, foreign bodies, or trauma. They may also assess the patency of the nasal airways. Depending on the suspected condition, other diagnostic procedures might be performed in conjunction with the rhinoscopy, such as imaging studies (e.g., X-rays, CT scans) or biopsies.

The procedure is generally well-tolerated, though some discomfort or a gagging sensation may occur, especially with older or less advanced endoscopic equipment. Local anesthetic sprays or general anesthesia may be used to ensure patient comfort and cooperation, particularly in veterinary medicine. The findings from a nasenuntersuchung are crucial for determining the correct diagnosis and developing an appropriate treatment plan for nasal ailments.
