Narziß

Narziß is a figure from Greek mythology, most famously known for the myth of his own beauty and the tragic consequences that followed. According to the most common version of the story, found in Ovid's Metamorphoses, Narziß was the son of the river god Cephissus and the nymph Liriope. He was renowned for his exceptional handsomeness, which captivated all who beheld him, both men and women. Despite numerous advances, Narziß was arrogant and disdainful, rejecting all suitors.

Among those who fell for Narziß was the nymph Echo. Cursed by Hera to only be able to repeat the last words spoken to her, Echo was unable to express her own love directly. She followed Narziß, and when he called out, she responded. He eventually noticed her, but his cruel rejection drove Echo to waste away until only her voice remained.

Nemesis, the goddess of retribution, decided to punish Narziß for his vanity and cruelty. She led him to a pool of clear water where he saw his own reflection. Instantly, Narziß became infatuated with the image, believing it to be another beautiful being. He was unable to tear himself away from the reflection, and in his despair and longing, he eventually died by the pool. Where he died, a flower sprang up, known as the narcissus, which bears his name and is often depicted with its head bowed, as if gazing into the water. The myth of Narziß has become the origin of the term "narcissism," referring to excessive self-love and admiration.
