Narcine
Narcine is a genus of marine electric ray species in the family Narcinidae, native to the tropical and temperate waters of the Indo-Pacific region. These rays are characterized by their distinctive flat, disk-shaped bodies and elongated tails, which can be up to twice the length of their bodies. They are known for their ability to generate electric fields, which they use for both hunting and self-defense. Narcine species are typically bottom-dwelling, feeding on small invertebrates and fish. They are often found in shallow waters, including coral reefs and seagrass beds. Despite their electric capabilities, narcine rays are generally considered harmless to humans, as their electric discharge is not strong enough to cause serious injury. However, they can deliver a mild shock if handled, which may deter potential predators. Narcine species are of interest to researchers studying bioelectricity and the evolution of sensory systems.
